Eco-Friendly Near Zero Green Home

Our Clients was in process of building a new home in the Passive House Standard. It was the first of it's kind in the Chicago Area. The developer and architect built for energy efficiency and strived to use green building materials  that would not introduce any toxins or chemicals during construction.

The Clients' asked KTID to furnish spaces with furniture, lighting and rugs that meet the criteria of Healthy Child, Healthy World. Their main concern was for the health of their two children.

Process

We met with a Healthy Child, Healthy Home Representative (healthychild.org) to discuss the requirements of a Healthy Home and how to accomplish furnishing a space with furniture, rugs, lighting, accessories that will not add toxins to the environment. KTID found off-gassed furniture from consignment stores, and floor sample sales at showrooms such as Holly Hunt, Century Furniture. KTID sourced organic, toxin-free fabrics to re-upholster current furniture and for all window treatments. We sourced toxin-free rugs from Organic Looms and Oscar Isberian Rugs. KTID designed shelves and a banquette table made of Urea Formaldehyde-free Wood.

Results

Our clients live healthfully in their new home. Air quality tests performed are the baseline for future homes. Healthy Child, Healthy World organization performed testing to ensure the home is ultimately toxin-free and healthy for families. The Clients love their new home and are happy to be advocates for Passive House and Healthy Child, Healthy World!
