Organic and Light Filled Bathroom

A couple with a child needed their master bath updated from builder-grade to custom bath to reflect their personality and needs. Mother is an artist and understood composition and color. The mother had collected pictures of elements they liked: pebble tile, wood floors, plants, penny tile. They needed better lighting and wanted to accentuate the skylight. They needed to keep the storage, but use it differently and wanted to hide cords. They wanted their 3-year-old daughter to have access to her personal items in the vanity.

Process

  • KTID learned how the couple
uses the bathroom now and how they want it to change/not change. Their aesthetic is simple, organic, clean..
  • We used Pinterest boards to share imagery and comment remotely to keep the Style Session dialogue going.
  • We began with finishes: Pebble Tile, Porcelain Floor Tile that looks like wood and
    a nice vanity.
  • We spec'd round hand-made tiles to line the inside of the skylight and bounce
    sunlight into the room.
  • The Cabinet pulls are minimal. The Mirror is long and
short, with same dimensions as a subway tile (1:2).
  • Artwork is a commissioned piece of Moss Art that the child loves to spray every
morning as part of her routine.
  • Recessed lighting paired with 2 pendants to create layered and functional lighting
  • Walk-in glass shower replaces tub. Two overhead lights in the shower compensate for the dark tile. Created two niches: one lower for shaving support and the other higher for product.
  • Installed rolling baskets on bottom of vanity for ease of accessing product,
one being for the child’s items.
  • Value added: KTID noted some deteriorating wood below the toilet, when the bathroom was gutted. We had the contractor replace the damaged and mildewed wood.

Results

Our client LOVES the Moss art and her daughter likes to spritz it. She also loves the customized things we did that aren’t necessarily standard – such as the interior cabinet outlet, the tile-lined skylight, the knee-high niche for shaving her legs and the hook for her puff. She appreciates how the faux wood porcelain floor warms the space.
